Jeep Safari Holguin - Green & Blue
On your Holguín Jeep Safari you will be taken to explore the unspoiled and lush landscapes between the city itself and the Bariay Bay. A Jeep Safari is the best way to get out and explore “real” Cuba, travelling along roads that simply cannot be reached by cars or coaches. Make sure you remember your camera as you get up close and personal to the island that Christopher Columbus claimed to be “the most beautiful land that human eyes have ever seen” when he discovered it on 28 October 1492. Your Holguín Jeep Safari will lead you down the same paths as Columbus once walked, giving you an insight into what he experienced. The arrival of Columbus in the Bariay Bay brought great hope among the natives who believed that strangers came straight from heaven to protect them from the attacks of the Arawak Indians. On your Jeep Safari, you will have some time to explore the Bariay National Memorial Park, created in 1992 by the artist, Caridad Ramos Mosquera. Today the park is home to 16 statues of Native American Gods, surrounded by Greek columns in the shape of a ship’s hull to commemorate the day Columbus first stepped foot on Cuban land. After lunch, you will be taken to the archaeological site of “Museo Chorro de Maita” which protects the remains of an excavated Taino Indian village. The village is just one of nearly 100 archaeological sites in this area, mostly dating back to the 16th century. Among the remains found here were some Europeans who can be seen lying in their graves, arms crossed. The museum also houses the well-preserved remains of a further 62 human skeletons and the bones of a dog. You will also see some offerings which were gifted to the dead by the Indians for their journey to the Afterlife. Across from the museum is the reconstructed “Aldea Taína” that features life-sized models of an indigenous village, depicting the daily lives of the Cuban indigenous population and giving you an insight into such things as their diet, agricultural practices and native rituals.
