Day Trip to Del Rio
With this day trip, the bus will pick you up at your hotel and take you westward from Havana to Pinar del Río. Leaving the buzzing urban jungle behind, you will be greeted by colourful houses, well-tended tobacco plantations and rust-red soil as you travel along the rutted roads. The idyllic Pinar del Río Province is one of the best areas for growing tobacco and has certainly earned its nickname of “Garden of Cuba”. A particular highlight of your trip to Pinar del Río is the “Fábrica de Tabacos”, where you can witness the long and famous tradition of tobacco manufacture. You can observe the “Torcedores” busily rolling the finest cigars on their thighs, making between 40 and 180 a day. Before heading to the picturesque Pinar del Río itself, you can enjoy your lunch, knowing it is already paid for. Pinar del Río is a sleepy town where time seems to have stopped ticking. As you stroll through the town you will notice the locals relaxing on their pastel-coloured terraces, cigar in hand. Wander through the narrow streets, past the well-preserved neoclassical buildings and colourful houses, before reaching “Calle Martí”, where the intriguing “Palacio de Guasch” awaits you. The palace was built by a well-travelled doctor who aimed to incorporate all of his favourite architectural styles into one building, and on this tour, you can experience this rich tapestry for yourself. On this same street, you will also find the “Teatro Milanés”, named after the romantic poet, José Jacinto Milanés, as well as the History Museum, which contains some personal items belonging to the founder of the Cha-Cha-Cha. Your day trip will end late afternoon as you head back to Havana.
