Highlights of East Cuba On The Move
The Sierra Maestra
Your Self-Drive Holiday will take you through Cuba’s largest mountain range, the Sierra Maestra, home to Cuba’s highest peak, Pico Turquino, and steep mountains that slope into the Caribbean Sea. Nestled in the forests, you will find the former camp of the Cuban rebel army. It is in this spot that brothers Fidel and Raul Castro, Che Guevara and other freedom fighters planned and campaigned the Cuban Revolution. The rebels were not leaving anything to chance when they picked this spot to hide from Batista’s troops, since it is located right in the heart of the thick jungle of the Sierra Maestra Mountains. “Comandancia de la Plata”, the original headquarters of the revolutionaries is located in the Pico Turquino National Park and is a must for history enthusiasts. Our East Cuba On The Move Self-Drive Holiday therefore provides the perfect opportunity to explore Cuban history at first-hand.
Guardalavaca Beach Region
After driving through the island, you can sit back and enjoy the turquoise seas on the beaches of Guardalavaca, located in the Holguín Province. On the Eastern North coast of the island, where Christopher Columbus was once stranded, you will find numerous small bays where you can relax on the fine white sand. If lying on the beach is not enough, the surrounding coral reefs and their crystal blue waters are perfect for diving or snorkelling. Catamaran trips can also be organised. Enjoy the tranquillity that the beaches have to offer and let yourself contemplate your time spent in Cuba – the perfect end to your Self-Drive Holiday!
The Cathedral of El Cobre
During your East Cuba On The Move Self-Drive Holiday, you will head to the Pilgrimage Church of El Cobre. Situated in the foothills of the Sierra Maestra Mountain Range, not far from Santiago de Cuba, this baroque church is dedicated to the “Virgen de la Caridad” (“Our Lady of Charity”). Legend has it that in 1612, when three fishermen were out in the Bay of Nipe, a storm arose. The fisherman saw a strange object floating in the water which turned out to be a wooden statue of “Our Lady of Charity”. The fishermen miraculously made it to shore, with the statue on board. They took the statue back to their hometown of El Cobre, an important copper mining town, where the statue became an object of worship and celebrated as the Patroness Saint of Cuba. For Santeria followers, the “Virgen de la Caridad” is the goddess of both rivers and love. From the cathedral, you can also enjoy the spectacular views of the Sierra Maestra Mountains!
