Highlights of Cuba On The Move:
Che Guevara Mausoleum in Santa Clara
A definite highlight of our Cuba On The Move Self-Drive Holiday is the Mausoleum of Che Guevara in Santa Clara. During the Cuban Revolution at the end of the 1950s, Che Guevara accomplished one of his greatest feats in this very town. Under his charge, the rebel army was able to stop and capture an armoured train carrying weapons to General Batista, and in doing so capture Santa Clara, paving the way to the ultimate conquest of Havana. For many years after Che Guevara’s death, his remains were thought to be lost, but in 1997 he was brought back to Cuba and laid to rest after being found in Bolivia.
A visit to some of Cuba’s most beautiful beaches on the Ancón Peninsula provides the perfect opportunity to relax on your personalised Self-Drive Holiday. After a long drive, it is important to wind down, and what better way to do so than swimming in the crystal clear and refreshing sea, snorkelling or diving in the nearby coral reefs or simply relaxing in the shade of the palm trees? Other highlights include the breathtaking sunsets that can be seen from here and the extensive mangrove bays that surround the Peninsula. For those who seek the city-life in the evenings, vibrant Trinidad is only a 10 minute drive away, where you can dance all night long to live music in the “Casa de la Musica” and “Casa de la Trova” music salons.
No Self-Drive Holiday would be complete without a trip to West Cuba, home to the legendary tobacco plantations, and no trip to West Cuba is complete without visiting the Viñales Valley! If you are interested in seeing how the world-famous tobacco referred to as the “brown gold” of Cuba is produced and grown on the valley’s fertile soil, you need look no further. You will also discover the steep conical “mogote” karst formations which stand in between the plantations, making the region a real feast for the eyes. For anyone who is partial to a Cuban cigar, we strongly recommend visiting the local tobacco factories, where you can experience the art of rolling the perfect Cuban cigar. Whether you prefer Cohiba, Romeo y Julieta or Montecristo cigars, the tobacco is grown right here in Western Cuba.
